Prisoners must be provided with earplugs. Reason: Their free compatriots are too loud when drunk and show no respect for the captives’ need to sleep. Such, according to RÚV, is often the situation in Reykjavík’s downtown prison on Skólavörðustígur.
The prison is 140 years old and won’t be operating as such for much longer. A new prison at Hólmsheiði, on the outskirts of the city, is expected to open at the beginning of next year.
The old prison includes a court room full of history and antique furniture, which will be preserved.
