Jón Þórðarsson, mayor of Borgarfjörður Eystri, East Iceland, population 95, estimates 40,000 tourist will come to the village this year to see puffins at Hafnarhólmi islet by the harbor―one of the best places in Iceland to see them up close and personal, RÚV reports.

He says the municipality plans to build a service house for the tourists and the local seamen at the harbor no later than next spring.

According to the local population, the puffins arrive in Hafnarhólmi from their winter holiday in the south part of the North Atlantic Ocean at 7:30 pm on April 7, and leave August 2, just before noon.

Jón reveals he has met people from faraway places like Singapore and Japan, who arrived too late, crying out loud, on their knees, devastated to have missed seeing the beautiful bird in Hafnarhólmi.
