The glacial outburst flood in Skaftá river caused damage in the hundreds of millions of ISK (ISK 100 million equals USD 761,000 or EUR 708,000), if damage to farmland is included, RÚV reports. About ten farms suffered damage to cultivated land and pasture.
Sandra Brá Jóhannsdóttir, district manager in Skaftárhreppur, believes damage can be better assessed in the spring.
The flood swept way the road in Skaftárdalur valley, which no longer is on the Icelandic Road Administration’s list of roads and, therefore, the Road Administration is not required to repair it. A month after the flood, the bridge over Eldvatn is still closed, forcing residents to take a much longer detour through Hrífunes. That affects school bussing and those who work outside the area.
