A rare phenomenon called a moonbow, or moon rainbow, was caught on camera near Stykkishólmur, West Iceland, Sunday evening, bbc.com reports.
Víðir Björnsson was travelling in the dark by car in heavy rain when he suddenly couldn’t believe his eyes. He stopped and took a picture. A second moonbow was visible, he states, but it’s hard to detect in the photo.
A moonbow is a rainbow which forms when light is reflected off the surface of the moon, refracting off clouds, which are filled with moisture. Oftentimes, a moonbow appears white. The phenomenon is easiest to detect at full moon.
