Our photographer Páll Stefánsson sent us this photo of where Ring Road 1 has been closed in South Iceland, due to the violent storm affecting the area.
A press release from ICE-SAR states that rescue workers were called out to assist the passengers of a bus which drove off the road near Hótel Dyrhólaey. On their way to assist the passengers, rescue workers found three cars off the road by Grafarhóll. One of them had been abandoned.
The driver of one car ignored instructions to turn around where the Ring Road had been closed, but others heeded warnings and turned around. Traffic is reportedly light in the area.
Some domestic flights were canceled today due to weather.
The country is experiencing a shortage of a kind it hasn’t seen before: Shovels are sold out in most stores in Reykjavík, mbl.is reports, and new orders have been placed to Norway. Those should arrive by Christmas.
