Services Affected by Extreme Weather - UPDATED

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police has declared a state of uncertainty due to the extreme weather warning, mbl.is reports.

Such a state entails that a series of events is in place which could threaten people’s safety and/or put communities at risk.

Many roads are being closed and will stay closed until tomorrow.

We have compiled a list of services affected by the extreme weather. We urge you to heed warnings and stay indoors if you’re in South Iceland, and after 5 pm elsewhere in the country, including the capital area.

Because of the weather, many businesses and offices will be closing early today.

Bus services will also be affected. Buses after 5 pm in Reykjavík have been canceled.

Parents have been asked to pick up their children from school and from sport centers by 4 pm.

Swimming pools, as well as all cultural centers, such as libraries and museum, in Reykjavík will close at 4:30 pm.

The Tourist Information Office on Aðalstræti, downtown Reykjavík, will close at 5 pm.

All sport events, including practices, scheduled after 3 pm in Reykjavík have been canceled.

All domestic flights have also been canceled.

Many banks around the country will close by 3 pm.

Hospice care and in-home social services in Reykjavík will be limited after 2 pm. Travel will not be provided for the disabled after 2 pm, and all passengers will be returned home by 4:30 pm.
