The Oslo tree did not survive Monday’s storm despite being taken to shelter, RÚV reports. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful.
Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson announced on his Facebook page this morning that he would pick up a new tree from Heiðmörk, near Reykjavík, today. A press release from the City of Reykjavík confirms the mayor took down a 60-year-old Sitka spruce today, which will replace the gift from Oslo.
This is the second year in a row that a Norwegian gift falls prey to Icelandic wind.
