There is a lot of slippery ice on roads and pavements in the capital region today, following several warm days and temperatures at, or just below, freezing today.

Some residents may not be aware that they can pick up municipal sand and salt for free from City of Reykjavík service centers.

The sand and salt can be used by residents wishing to improve safety on pavements near their homes, as well as on their own driveways and garden paths.

Salt and sand can be accessed by all local residents at the following locations:

Stórhöfði Service Center (car access from Svarthöfði)

Njarðargata Neighborhood Center

Jafnasel Neighborhood Center

Kjalarnes Neighborhood Center

The works base at Árbæjarblettur

The works base at Klambratún off Flókagata

All the collection points are open Monday to Thursday, 07.30 to 17.00 and on Fridays from 07.30 to 15.25, Vísir reports.

People are asked to bring a container with them, but it is also possible to get bags on site. There are shovels available at the piles of sand and salt.
