Eye witnesses to the bank robbery on Borgartún, just two buildings down the street from the offices of Iceland Review, say the robbers caused substantial damage inside the bank. According to Vísir, they threatened the staff and demanded money. The men, who are reported to have been armed with handguns, also shook a cashier.
Eye witnesses describe the men as having their faces covered. No one was harmed.
A white van was parked outside the bank, and the men are said to have fled by car. They are still being sought, according to Vísir.
Landsbanki CEO Steinþór Pálsson (pictured above) was visibly upset when he spoke with journalists at the scene. He did not provide any detailed information, but said he was relieved that no one appeared to be hurt. Rúnar Pálmason, public relations officer at Landsbanki, told mbl.is that the men escaped with money, but the amount has not been disclosed.
Iceland Review photographer Páll Stefánsson took the above photos at the scene.
