Overnight Stays up by 36 Percent

The number of overnight stays at Icelandic hotels in December last year increased by 36 percent compared with December of 2014, from 133,300 to 181,900, according to Statistics Iceland. Overnight stays of foreign tourists represented 89 percent of the total.

The bulk of the overnight stays were in the capital area, or 146,600, which is a 35 percent increase from the previous year. South Iceland had the second highest number of overnight stays or 19,300.

The UK represented most of the overnight stays, or 61,100, followed by the US (36,200), and Germany (12,100).

The number of overnight stays January-December, 2015, was 2,815,900, which is a 22 percent increase from the previous year.
