Promote Iceland has just launched a new marketing effort called Iceland Academy―a web-based introduction to Iceland.

The project was announced this morning. The effort, which is intended to increase awareness of and interest in Iceland as a destination, will begin February 25. The emphasis will be on responsible conduct by tourists, their safety and pleasure. The campaign teaches tourists about Icelandic culture, traditions and nature with mini-classes on the internet and social media.

The first five courses will be accessible on the website of Inspired by Iceland and can be followed on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Prospective visitors who watch the classes will have the option of taking a test to check their knowledge of the subject. Those who complete a test of every class offered can enter a lottery where the prize is a graduation trip to Iceland.

Inga Hlín Pálsdóttir, director of travel services and creative projects at Promote Iceland, says the goal of Iceland Academy is to assist the informed tourist in experiencing the best food, the most beautiful landscape and the most interesting culture in a safe and responsible way.

She stated, “The majority of tourists want to experience nature, and we know that Icelandic nature must be treated with respect and care. We believe that if the traveler is better informed of conditions ahead of time, he or she will get more out of the trip and leave the country happier.”

Instructors at the Academy will inform tourists about safe travel, Icelandic cooking, winter activities, festivals, photography, geothermal spas and Icelandic history.

Following is a list of classes offered:

How to Avoid Hot Tub Awkwardness

Responsible Traveling in Iceland

How to Eat Like an Icelander

Staying Safe In Iceland

A Guide to Winter Sports in Iceland

Pack Warm and Stay Happy

Driving in Iceland

Therapeutic Iceland

A Guide to Icelandic Festivals

How to Travel Further in Iceland

Capturing the Northern Lights

A Beginner’s Guide to Icelandic Sagas

You can sign up for the Academy here (inspired.visiticeland.com), beginning February 25.
