Many people have come down with influenza since its first cases were detected almost four weeks ago, RÚV reports. Six people have required intensive care at Landspítali National University Hospital, most of them only for a short time, according to Dr. Ólafur Guðlaugsson, infectious disease specialist. He says the influenza affects both those who are healthy to begin with and those with underlying conditions.

Most people who get the flu are sick for a week, but those who get seriously ill are sick longer. Ólafur says it’s impossible to tell when the flu will peak, but he suspects it will soon.

He believes there are indications the flu this year is more severe than last year. The good news is that, according to Óafur, the flu shot this season appears to work unusually well, since only eight percent of the flu patients are people who were immunized.
