The road leading to the US plane wreck on Sólheimasandur, South Iceland, has been closed by landowners, mbl.is reports. The reason is the bad state of the land on the three km (two mile) stretch from the highway to the wreck, due to repeated off-road driving by visitors. The plane wreck was featured in a much-talked-about video by Justin Bieber last fall.

According to Benedikt Bragason, he and other landowners built a road to the wreck and marked it carefully, but to no avail. Therefore, they’re going to put up a sign, closing access to the site.

Benedikt states the wreck has become one of the area’s major tourist attractions. “We’d like to find out what can be done to allow people to keep visiting this plane wreck. We’d like to allow people to do so, but we can’t afford to let them treat the land this way.”

He continued, “If Iceland becomes like this, then no one will want to come see it. We’re trying to make sure coming here continues to be interesting.”
