Ski resorts all around Iceland are open today, Maundy Thursday, and most are expecting a busy day as today is the first public holiday of the five-day-long Easter weekend. However, the capital’s main ski areas are set to remain closed.
The skiing area in Siglufjörður, North Iceland, will be open until 16.00 today and offers the perfect conditions of packed dry snow—with machines having finished the packing down yesterday evening, according to a statement from the resort. All slopes are expected to survive the day in good condition and weather conditions are set fair all day, with temperatures in the region of freezing point.
In Iceland’s second city, Akureyri, the weather is also excellent today, at one degree above freezing and no wind. Akureyri’s ski area, Hlíðarfjall, is open until 16.00 today, with the ski school also open.
Stafdalur ski area near Seyðisfjörður is open today, also until 16.00, with southeasterly winds at a mild six meters per second, temperatures of minus three, and snow falling intermittently throughout the morning.
The Tindastóll ski area near Sauðárkrókur is also open until 16.00 and has been enjoying excellent, sunny weather, with temperatures around freezing point and easterly breeze, four meters per second. Tungudalur ski area in Ísafjörður is also open.
Bláfjöll and Skálafell, the main ski resorts near to Reykjavík, are closed today due to windy conditions and heavy snow, RÚV reports.
