The computer services center at the University of Iceland today formally inaugurated its new supercomputer which, it is hoped, will provide a major boost to researchers in many different academic fields.

A statement from the university says that the supercomputer will open opportunities for research that was not previously possible in Iceland. Researchers in calculation-heavy fields at both the University of Iceland and Reykjavík University are set to benefit from the new computer, Vísir reports.

Computational Science is a quickly-growing area within scientific research and is increasingly spoken of as the third great research method—alongside experimental and theoretical research.

“Iceland has lagged behind neighboring countries in this area but now takes a big step towards equalizing the position of Icelandic scientists. All staff and students at the University of Iceland and Reykjavík University, working in fields where high levels of calculation are involved, will be able to benefit from the new computer equipment,” the statement reads.

The supercomputer was manufactured in China by Lenovo and the purchase was funded by the Icelandic Research Fund, with financial support from the University of Iceland, Reykjavík University and the UI computer services center.
