One person died in a collision between a passenger car and a 4x4 in Hvalfjörður tunnel, West Iceland, yesterday afternoon, RÚV reports. According to information from Landspítali University Hospital, three people are in intensive care and one person under examination. No further information about the patients is available.
The accident occurred around 2 pm. This is the first fatal accident to take place in the tunnel since it was opened in 1998.
According to mbl.is, the deceased was a passenger in a northbound car. All the people involved in the accident are Icelandic, mbl.is reports.
The Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter was called out to transport the injured, as were ambulances. The tunnel was closed until 5 pm yesterday.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
