Two men were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged murder of Guðmundur Einarsson, who disappeared in 1974. A total of six young people were convicted for his murder and for that of Geirfinnur Einarsson in 1980. Guðmundur and Geirfinnur both disappeared in 1974, but their bodies were never found.

According to Morgunblaðið’s sources, a new testimony led to the arrests. “We received a tip which required investigation, and it had to be done this way by having two men arrested, separately, and by taking a statement from them,” confirmed acting state prosecutor Davíð Þór Björgvinsson.

Both men have a long history with the police and have been in prison, one of them many times, serving heavy sentences.

Police also searched the home of one of the men’s partner. The condition for house searches is that the police have a strongly-backed up suspicion that a violation has been committed.

The Guðmundur and Geirfinnur murder cases were reopened in 2015 following a report by a task force appointed by the Ministry of the Interior to review the cases.

Update: RÚV reports that a search warrant was obtained, but that the house search was never conducted.
