WOW Air Captain Vignir Örn Guðnason had a revelation when he stepped into the cockpit yesterday at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. He looked at the instrument panel and saw before him a scoreboard. Only, both sides showed ENG, which made no sense. The left side read ENG 1, the right one ENG 2.
Up to this day as a pilot, he had seen but two buttons, which had a role in operating the plane’s engines. But yesterday was different. The much anticipated game between Iceland and England was coming up that night. Therefore, it was only natural for him to suddenly realize that before his eyes was a scoreboard.
Thinking fast, he did what he had to do and, before taking off, he changed the ENG on the right side to ISL, short for Iceland.
“This came to me as some sort of joke,” he confessed to mbl.is. But it turned out being dead serious. Vignir had predicted right. When he looked at the scoreboard, watching the game last night, he suddenly thought of a cockpit. Only, this time, the letters on one side had been changed to ISL.
