Eistnaflug Music Festival Opens

Eistnaflug.

The Eistnaflug Music Festival, first held in 2005, opened yesterday in Neskaupstaður, East Iceland, RÚV reports. This is a four-day long festival of metal, hardcore, punk, rock and indie bands, which takes place indoors. Organizers expect about 2,000 guests to attend.

This year, 77 bands take part in the festival, a record number, playing at two venues. Most of the bands are Icelandic, while others come from the US, the Faroe Islands, Austria, Finland Sweden, Germany France and Israel. The main stage is now at the sports center, whereas the smaller stage is at the community center.

The weather gods had threatened heavy rain for the weekend, but they have since improved the forecast, which now includes only a little rain. Cool temperatures are expected.

The biggest attraction this year is probably Opeth from Sweden, but Icelandic singer Páll Óskar, who is known for anything but heavy metal music, will perform on Saturday. On his Facebook page, Páll Óskar states that appearing at a venue full of heavy metal musicians is one of the greatest challenges of his life, “and I’ve never been as excited about any gig. Disco queen vs. heavy metal rockers. I think it’s got to end in true love.”

The festival runs through Saturday. You can see the lineup of Eistnaflug here.
