About 60,000 people attended the Reykjavík Pride Parade on Saturday. President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson addressed the parade. Not only was he the first president of Iceland to participate in Reykjavík Pride, but also, according to gayiceland.is, the first president in the world to officially participate in a Pride festival.
He told gayiceland.is, “For years, I’ve followed the Pride festival and watched the Parade in an audience of thousands, with my family, and always enjoyed the festivities immensely – it’s always such fun.
So I wasn’t going to change my usual plans and when I was asked to participate in this fine event, I of course said ‘Yes’ right away.”
RÚV reports that the Parade was unusually political this year. Among the 39 floats, one supported Bradley Manning and others. Manning, who is gay, faces decades in prison for leaking classified US documents to the public. Numerous participants criticized countries that limit gay rights.
