Icelandic swimmer Eygló Ósk Gústafsdóttir qualified last night for the final in the 200 m backstroke at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In the semi-finals, she set a new Icelandic national record, swimming the distance in 2:08.84, according to RÚV. You can watch her swim here.

She improved her old Icelandic and Nordic record by 20 fractions of a second. Eygló finished in 7-8th place, at the same time as Daria Ustinova from Russia.

This result makes Eygló the third Icelandic swimmer to qualify for finals at the Olympic Games. Örn Arnarson finished 4th in the 200 m backstroke in Sidney in 2000, and Hrafnhildur Lúthersdóttir finished 6th in the 100 m breaststroke in Rio on Monday.

The 200 m backstroke final will take place after midnight tonight, at 1:03 am, Icelandic time. It will be broadcast live on RÚV.
