Bónus Event Impossible to Exit

Customers at the Bónus grocery store on Laugavegur, downtown Reykjavík, were surprised on Saturday night not to find anyone at the registers, let alone in the aisles, ready to offer assistance. Some of them searched in every corner for employees, but without success, according to Morgunblaðið.

Were they playing hide and seek? Not so. After an hour and a half of confusion, the store manager showed up to the packed store, not to offer assistance, but to show customers the door. Even a couple of police officers made an appearance. Why the unfriendly reception, you may ask. For the simple reason that on Culture Night, employees forgot to lock the door as they left. The exit door, however, was locked, making it tough to leave this well-attended, unplanned event.

“There were about 100 people inside the store when I arrived,” reported the store manager, Axel Sigurðsson. I tried to show them out, and it took about five minutes.” He added, “Some thought I was loud and annoying. I was just firm.” He is not aware of any theft taking place during the confusion.
