The Icelandic men’s national basketball team beat Cyprus 84-62 in a qualifying game for the 2017 EuroBasket Championship at Laugardalshöll arena last night, Vísir reports. The Icelandic team took some time to warm up, but gained the upper hand during the third and fourth quarters of the game.
The victory means there is still a chance for Iceland to qualify for the championship, because on Saturday, they play against Belgium, the team that tops the group. The game begins at 4 pm at Laugardalshöll arena and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets timely.
If Iceland beats Belgium, that should suffice to qualify for the EuroBasket. Only a 16 point lead, however, would be enough for Iceland to finish first in the group.
The highest scorers of last night’s game were Hlynur Bæringsson with 18 points, Kristófer Acox with 10 points and Haukur Helgi Pálsson with 15.
