Two fatal traffic accidents occurred in Iceland late last night, RÚV reports. A foreign man died in South Iceland when he was hit by a westbound car on Ring Road 1, on Sólheimasandur beach, west of Pétursey mountain. The accident occurred shortly before 11 pm. The man was part of a group of ten who had parked their two cars on the shoulder of the road and stepped out of them. The driver of the car he was hit by was a foreign tourist.
It is not known how the accident occurred, but it is being investigated by the South Iceland Police. The road was closed for three hours while police worked at the scene.
Shortly after midnight, an accident was reported on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. An Icelandic man died when the car he was in rolled over. The accident took place a short distance east of the village Arnarstapi. A woman, who was also in the car, is seriously injured in intensive care.
