The electrically powered schooner Opal, operated by Norðursigling, arrived in Reykjavík harbor yesterday. The schooner sailed here from Greenland, where it has spent the past six weeks sailing on Scoresbysund bay.
Opal will be docked in Reykjavík all week in connection with the conference Making Marine Applications Greener 2016, where guests will have a chance to sail onboard this environmentally friendly vessel.
The schooner was originally built in Damgarten, Germany in 1951, as a trawler. Between 1973 and 1981, the ship was converted into the two-mast schooner it is today. Opal has sailed all over the world and has crossed the Atlantic Ocean a few times.
