When the lights go out, you know the show is about to begin. Therefore, when the street lights in selected areas in Reykjavík go out tonight, look towards the sky and get ready to watch the northern lights show. The Icelandic Met Office forecasts a very high activity of the aurora borealis tonight (6 on a scale of 0 to 9), with clear skies in most parts of the country.

For this reason, the City of Reykjavík has decided to turn off all streetlights in selected parts of the city between 10 and 11 pm tonight. Lights will be turned off in the western part of the city, downtown, and in the following neighborhoods: Hlíðar, Grafarvogur, Laugarás, Heimar, Vogar, Tún, Skólavörðuholt, Fell, Berg, Hólar in Breiðholt, and Sel.

This will give people in the capital a unique chance to enjoy the northern lights. Residents are encouraged to help improve the visibility by turning lights off in their homes. They are also encouraged to drive with particular caution during this hour.

You can follow the aurora borealis forecast on vedur.is.
