There are 560 people in Iceland waiting to serve their prison sentences, according to mbl.is. Director of Prisons Páll Winkel reports that the list has never been this long, and those who have waited the longest have waited six years to serve their sentences.
Páll hopes the list will be rapidly shortened once the new prison at Hólmsheiði is taken into use, but most of the people on the list received short sentences. The prison will receive its first prisoners next week.
As many as 26 sentences have become invalid this year because they were not served in time.
