Yesterday was the first day of winter in Iceland. Not surprisingly, it brought along poor road conditions, resulting in a few traffic accidents last night on icy roads.
Two ambulances were sent to Holtavörðuheiði mountain, West Iceland, because of a rollover, which occurred when the driver lost control of the car on an icy road.. There were three people in the car. Alll of them escaped with minor injuries, RÚV reports.
Two accidents occurred in Svínahraun, south of Langjökull glacier, both due to icy conditions. Two westbound cars collided in one accident, while the other involved the rollover of an eastbound vehicle. The accidents caused only minor injuries.
A car rolled over in Skagafjörður yesterday and landed upside down in Hvammsá river, mbl.is reports. The cause of the accident is not known. The driver and passenger,tourists in their twenties, miraculously escaped unharmed. Police believe what saved them was that they were wearing their seatbelts.
This morning, many mountain roads remain icy or with icy spots. There are also icy roads along the south coast. Police advice drivers to drive with caution and stress the importance of wearing seatbelts.
