The Icelandic Cost Guard received an emergency distress signal at noon today from a personal locator beacon in the highlands northeast of Hofsjökull glacier, RÚV reports.

The Coast Guard helicopter, which was monitoring fishing vessels on Húnaflói bay, was immediately sent to the area, 75 km south of Akureyri, and landed there at about 1 pm. There, it found five US tourists whose vehicle had gotten stuck.

One of them possessed a device with which they had been able to send an emergency signal to a satellite in Norway, which then transmitted the signal to the Icelandic Coast Guard. The information received gave a location, registration number of the device and its country of origin.

The helicopter flew the group to Akureyri. No one was injured. Rescue teams were going to check on the vehicle.
