FourFourTwo, one of the world’s largest football magazines, has named Icelanders ‘Fans of the Year’ for their powerful presence at Euro 2016 in France and their “full-blooded backing” for their team with the famous ‘Thunderclap’ or ‘Viking Chant.’
After qualifying for their first ever Euros, the Icelandic national team in men’s football beat the odds, made it to the quarter finals after knocking England out of the competition. They “got the miracle they deserved—if you can call beating England a miracle…” FourFourTwo writes.
Around 30,000 Icelanders—close to 10 percent of the nation—traveled to France to support their team. In the quarter finals, Iceland came up against the host country and bowed out 5-2. Iceland is the smallest nation in history to qualify for the Euros.
