Skiers in the capital area can likely rejoice next week, because there are plans to finally open the Bláfjöll Ski Resort, a half hour drive from Reykjavík, on Monday, the second day of Christmas.
Snow fell overnight in the capital area, increasing the likelihood of a white Christmas.
Workers in Bláfjöll finally have the snow they’ve been waiting for, albeit in small amounts. They are busy preparing for a possible opening next week, aiming at having some lifts, at least, operating by Monday.
“At last, at last, at last,” a message on their website reads. “We finally have snow that appears to be here to stay.”
Einar Bjarnason, operations manager in Bláfjöll, told mbl.is, “At last we can open!” He added, “We’re going to open next week, even if it’s only one kids’ lift.”
If the weather gods cooperate, the holiday hours of operation will be as follows:
Monday, December 26: 11 am-4 pm (This is a public holiday, so it will no doubt be busy.)
December 27-30: 2 pm-9pm
New Year’s Eve: Closed
New Year’s Day: Noon-4 pm
