One person died in an accident on Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass yesterday afternoon, according to the West Iceland Police. The accident occurred at about 2:30 pm.
A northbound passenger car collided with a southbound 4x4, resulting in the death of the driver of the passenger car. The driver and passenger of the 4x4 escaped with minor injuries. They were transported by the National Coast Guard helicopter to Landspítali National University Hospital for examination.
Conditions at the accident site were very difficult: there was a snowstorm and blowing snow, and the road was snow-covered and icy.
Holtavörðuheiði is the main passage between the north and the south. It was closed while police worked on the scene, but has been reopened.
