A 20-year-old Icelandic woman is missing. She was last seen at the bar Húrra on Tryggvagata in downtown Reykjavík, where she was enjoying an evening out with friends, at about 5 am Saturday morning, Vísir reports. She left the place without them. Police have revealed that security cameras show her walking up (east) Laugavegur, alone, after leaving the bar.
The only other clue police have to go by is that a signal from Birna’s cell phone was last detected in Hafnarfjörður, south of Reykjavík, on or near the street Flatahraun, close to the old fire station, shortly before 6 am. That’s where the phone seems to have run out of battery. Friends, family and strangers have been combing that area today, to no avail.
RÚV reports that the phone signal doesn’t tell us she was there, or whether she stopped there, or was in a car that went past there. The phone could, furthermore, possibly have been stolen. No SMS was sent from it after 3 am on Saturday morning.
The girl’s name is Birna Brjánsdóttir, born in 1996. She is 170 cm tall (5 foot 7 inches), weighs 70 kg (154 lbs), with long, strawberry-blond hair. When she was last seen, she was wearing black jeans, a light-gray sweater, a black hooded fleece jacket, and black Dr. Marten shoes. You can see more photos of her here. Birna’s mother, Sigurlaug Hreinsdóttir, appeared on TV tonight, appealing to anyone with information about he daughter to step forward.
This is another picture of Birna, distributed by the police.
Sigurlaug stated, “The only thing we’ve thought of… because she enjoyed talking to tourists, is that she could have accepted a ride with some foreigner, maybe south [of Reykjavík] by the sea. We’ve been knocking on the doors of random apartments here with her picture, asking if anyone has seen her, because there are no clues. The police are somehow lost in this case and find nothing.”
Sigurlaug appealed to anyone with relevant information to contact the police. “If you’re holding her captive, just let her go and contact [the police],” she pleaded.
Anyone with information about Birna’s whereabouts after 5 am Saturday morning, please contact the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police at +354 444-1000 as soon as possible. The police have a Facebook page here.
