RÚV reports today that Birna Brjánsdóttir’s ID was found in a waste basket onboard the trawler Polar Nanoq, when the police searched the ship. Two of the trawler’s crew members are in police custody, suspected in Birna’s death. Her body was found on Reykjanes peninsula on Sunday.

An autopsy was performed yesterday. The police have declined to share preliminary results regarding the possible cause of death.

They are convinced that Birna was killed inside a red Kia Rio, rented by the two suspects. Her blood was found in the car. Results of the analysis of biological samples on items confiscated onboard Polar Nanoq are still being awaited.

The red car was detected by security cameras on Laugavegur, where Birna disappeared Saturday morning, and again by the Hafnarfjörður harbor. The two men are seen stepping out of the car by the harbor and talking for a while, before one of them returns to the ship, while the other one drives away. The car was later caught on a security camera in the area by the harbor where Birna’s shoes were found.

The suspects will be interrogated today, for the first time in three days. With the help of an interpreter, the interrogations will be in Greenlandic.

Polar Nanoq is expected to leave harbor in Hafnarfjörður today, but its catch was landed yesterday, after police gave permission to do so.
