The official visit of Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Reid to Denmark began this morning, RÚV reports. This is the couple’s first official visit abroad since Guðni took office August 1 of last year.

The presidential couple drove to Amalienborg Palace in an old Rolls Royce, provided by the Danish court, where they were received by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Henrik, prince of Denmark.

After a short stop at the palace, the president and his wife went to Jónshús, an Icelandic culture house in Copenhagen, named after Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879), the leader of the Icelandic independence movement.

Later today, they will be visiting the Danish parliament, where they meet with Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Speaker of the Danish parliament Pia Kjærsgaard.

This afternoon, Guðni will deliver a gift from the Icelandic nation to the Danish one—700 copies of the Icelandic Sagas, which have just been translated into Danish. Those will be distributed to libraries and educational institutions throughout Denmark.

During their visit, which concludes Thursday morning, the presidential couple will reside in Amalienborg Palace.

You can watch the presidential couple’s arrival at the palace here.
