Icelandic actress Hera Hilmarsdóttir will be the female lead in Universal and MRC’s adaptation of Philip Reeve’s Mortal Engines, to be written and produced by Peter Jackson, Variety reports.
The film, to be co-written by Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, will be directed by Christian Rivers.
The book on which the film is to be based is set thousands of years in the future, where cities roam the globe on wheels, engaged in a battle over diminishing resources. On one of the cities, Tom Natsworthy has an encounter with a mysterious woman from the Outland, who will change his life forever.
Production is to begin in New Zealand in the spring, and the film will be released in December next year.
The sci-fi movie is the first in a planned series of films based on Reeve’s novels.
