The Icelandic fishermen’s strike, which began full force in mid-December, finally ended last night after fishermen narrowly voted to approve a wage contract signed by their representatives on Saturday morning, RÚV reports.

The deal was approved by 52.4 percent of the vote, while 46.9 percent voted against it. There were 2,214 registered voters, 1,189 of whom took part. Thus, voter participation was 53.7 percent, with 623 voting for the agreement and 558 against.

The fishing fleet is now ready to sail, and some boats already left harbor last night.

Some fishermen were relieved to get back to work, while others voiced their disapproval of the contract. Jens Garðar Helgason, head of Fisheries Iceland, called it a good agreement.
