President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson unexpectedly joined almost 30 swimmers in a sea swim from Ægisíða, on the west side of Reykjavík, to his official residence at Bessastaðir on Saturday, Vísir reports. Guðni started the day by welcoming the swimmers and stating he doesn’t doubt the health benefits of taking a dip in cold ocean water.
The swim was organized by Sjósundfélag Íslands (The Icelandic Association of Ocean Swimming) and the swimmers were accompanied by the Ársæll division of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue and Reykjavík capital area police to make sure the event ran smoothly.
The group took off from Ægisíða at 2 pm on Saturday. The President joined the swimmers for the last 100 metres. Upon arrival at Bessastaðir, the swimmers were welcomed to warm themselves up in the president’s hot tub.
