In a surprising turn of events today, the Icelandic national women‘s soccer team beat Germany 2-3 in Wiesbaden, Germany. This was the second match in the World Cup Qualifying after Iceland beat the Faroe Islands in the first round.

Germany was thought to be the likely winner, as they hadn't lost a match in World Cup Qualifying since June 1998. Furthermore, the German team had won 26 matches in a row prior to the showdown with Iceland. Germans are considered giants of women's football, having won the World Cup twice previously.

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir scored two of Iceland‘s goals and Elín Metta Jensen scored one, after a fantastic turn and finish.

Iceland's next match will be against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
