The campaign 'Bleikar og bláar heyrúllur' (Blue and Pink Bale Wrappings) has sold hay bale wrappings to raise cancer awareness for the second year running, Skessuhorn reports. This year saw the addition of the blue colour, to raise awareness for bladder cancer in males .The wrappings have splashed colour onto the countryside while raising awareness at the same time. Pink wrapping was the sole colour available last year, which raised awareness for breast cancer in females. The drive has been a huge hit as farmers all over the country have taken part in the campaign.
"We thank all of those who have contributed to this entertaining donation drive for their support. We celebrate the solidarity that farmers, distributors, and salesmen have shown in raising awareness for the most common cancers for Icelandic men and women", commented Halla Þorvaldsdóttir, the director of Krabbameinsfélag Íslands
The drive raised 1.2 million ISK (11500 $) for Krabbameinsfélag Íslands (the Cancer Association of Iceland). Icelandic farmers, in tandem with distributors and producers, have spearheaded the campaign which aims to increase the number of screening tests for both breast and bladder cancer. All of the funds raised will go towards research in these areas.
