During Advent Arnar and Jón bring Christmas joy to visitors in Dalvík, North Iceland by decking their halls with 40 boxes worth of Christmas decorations collected through the years. RÚV visited the couple in their home yesterday, who say they simply enjoy spreading the joy of the season and having fun.
In the 14 years they have been together, Arnar Símonarson and Jón Arnar Sveinsson have collected ornaments from all around the world. Each item has its place in the house and it rarely changes.
“Some of them are of course things you’ve had since you were little. And then we remember where we’ve bought this item or that item,” says Jón. “We have a Christmas tree from mom and dad and another from grandma and grandpa. I think they’d be long gone by now if I hadn’t taken them aside.”
The couple run a popular flea market out of their garage year-round, which takes on a festive theme during the Christmas season. “It’s like a tiny community centre in the neighbourhood, people meet here and often come together,” says Arnar. “And then it’s just so awfully fun. There are often boxes here outside the garage on the weekends and you often find absolute treasures in them.”
“So when Christmas comes, then the Christmas spirit and decorations and stuff go up, and then we enjoy standing out here, welcoming people and giving a smile and spreading a little joy into people’s hearts. That’s really what's so fun about it, ” adds Arnar.
Jón also runs a flower arranging business from their basement during the Christmas season. “[When] we lived in Denmark I saw Christmas decoration workshops spring up in garages here and there just before Christmas. And I thought, why not just do it here?”
They may be crazy about Christmas, but Arnar and Jón don’t dread taking down the decorations when the season ends. “Sometimes we’re just relieved when they're gone. They've been up for a whole month by then,” says Jón.
