Police closed three shops belonging to “The Viking” chain yesterday, RÚV reports. The chain’s two Reykjavík locations and one location in Akureyri, North Iceland have all been closed. According to RÚV’s sources, Akureyri Police received a request from the customs commissioner to close the shop and place a police seal on it. A lawyer from the customs office says it is rare for such extensive measures to be undertaken.

Akureyri Police closed the Akureyri location of the chain at 4:34 yesterday afternoon. The shop’s three locations remain closed today.

Jóhanna Lára Guðbrandsdóttir, head of the legal department at the Customs Office told RÚV she was unable to comment on individual cases, but in general, national treasury debt collectors may request a cease of operations if a business owes a certain type of taxes.

Sigurður Guðmundsson, the chain’s owner, did not want to comment on the matter when approached by RÚV.
