Iceland featured prominently in two different advertisements which were aired at halftime of Superbowl LII, Vísir reports. Icelandic landscape and strongmen took centre stage in adverts from Turkish Airlines and the car manufacturer Dodge.
The car manufacturer Dodge aired an ad featuring the car make Ram where a group of vikings traverse the high seas, towing a Dodge Ram with them. The ad features a number of Icelanders, most notably the strongman Magnús Ver Magnússon, who won the World's Strongest Man competition four times in the 90s. The ad light-heartedly has some fun with the fact that the Minnesota Vikings were close to making it to the Superbowl.
Dr. Oz stars in the Turkish Airlines ad as he teaches viewers about the senses, where Iceland and the northern lights are used to show the wonders of eyesight. A group of travellers is shown gazing at the northern lights at Nesjavellir and next to Þingvallavatn, while divers from Norway were specifically brought to the country to record the scene with the whales. The scene was recorded during the middle of the night in lit up Þingvallavatn and was deemed the perfect setting due to how clear the water is.
