Buses will be now be charged for parking at Keflavík Airport, despite requests from the Icelandic Travel Industry Association to wait for a ruling on the issue, RÚV reports.
Until now, there has been no parking fee for buses servicing the airport. ISAVIA, the organization which operates Keflavík Airport, has announced they will begin charging buses a parking fee of ISK 19,900 (USD 200/EUR 160) starting today.
“We have to consider that parking at [the airport] is limited. We are charging taxi drivers, car rental companies, and individuals driving their own cars for parking[…] So we are discussing the last group which has yet to pay for access to these limited spots and that is what is being done,” stated ISAVIA Public Relations Officer Guðjón Helgason.
The Icelandic Competition Authority is currently considering the issue. The Icelandic Travel Industry Association sent ISAVIA a letter yesterday requesting the fee be waived until the Competition Authority had made a ruling on the matter. In the letter, the organisation stated they consider it important that “all uncertainty about the legality of the charges in question, including transparency issues and prerequisites for the charge, be eliminated before it is implemented.”
“We have consulted with the Icelandic Competition Authority on this matter and we have taken their remarks into consideration. We announced on Monday that the price which we had announced on December 1st would be lowered for the next six months and in addition we have added a lower-priced category. That’s what we have done,” stated Guðjón.
It remains unclear whether the additional cost will result in increased passenger fares.
