The President of Iceland was spotted ‘plogging’ last weekend, a new exercise trend combining jogging with picking up litter. Mbl.is reported first.

Plogging is a trend which began in Sweden around 2016 and is both good for the body and the environment. Halldóra Gyða Matthíasdóttir Proppé posted pictures of the president plogging around the Presidential Residence at Bessastaðir last Sunday.

The trend is picking up steam in Iceland. A Facebook group called “Plokk á Íslandi” (En. plogging in Iceland) has over 1,200 members, who share pictures of plogging in their neighbourhoods.

Einar Bárðarson, communications manager of Hafnarfjörður municipality near Reykjavík created the group. He says spring is a great season to go plogging. “This is the perfect time, when garbage is prominent and easy to pick up,” he remarked. “It’s easily visible in green areas and a lot of it is showing up now from under the snow. It’s great to be physically active and beautify the environment along the way.”
