Aldrei fór ég suður, or ‘I Never Went South,’ the music festival held over Easter weekend every year in the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords, kicked off on Friday evening, mbl.is reports. Started by Ísafjörður musician and icon Mugison, this widely attended free festival has been held for 15 years. This year, it was opened this year by Altaria, winner of 2018's ‘Icelandic Music Experiments’ battle of the bands.
Easter is typically a very popular skiing holiday in Iceland and so naturally, the music festival has increased the popularity of holiday skiing at Ísafjörður’s local ski slope. “Skiing and rock music are blended into one big Easter adventure out west here,” said Kristján Freyr Halldórsson, one of the festival organizers, who says that increasingly, visitors will go skiing during the day and then come to music shows at night.
