Passengers on cruise ship Ocean Diamond must have received a scare as heavy winds rocked the ship dramatically on its way into Reykjavík’s old harbour. Though the ship is now safely in port and no injuries are reported, it did sustain a scratch on its side during the difficult docking. Morgunblaðið reported first.
Minister of Fisheries Kristján Þór Júlíusson posted pictures of the docking on his Facebook page, with the caption “This one came close to not hitting the harbour entrance this morning.”
Assistant Harbourmaster Jón Þorvaldsson says a “considerably strong wind” was what caused Ocean Diamond to scrape against the northern edge of the harbour’s entrance. “The ship in is the port now,” Jón added, saying he does not know whether the harbour itself sustained any damage. There are only 100 metres between the lighthouses marking the harbour’s entrance.
Ocean Diamond has docked in Reykjavík’s harbour previously, but this may be first time it felt like a diamond in the rough.
