The actress Edda Björgvinsdóttir was chosen as 2018 City Artist of Reykjavík in a ceremony at Höfði. Líf Magneudóttir, the president of the city council, presented the award to Edda, on Iceland's independence day, the 17th of June.
The nomination is awarded to artists who have excelled in their art and had a profound effect on artistic scene in Iceland. Edda is one of Iceland's most acclaimed and experienced actors, having acted in culturally important television shows, movies and theatre shows, as well as working as a scriptwriter, director and the head of her own theatre. The movie Stella í orlofi (Stella on Holiday) is probably her best-known movie but recently she starred in a role in Undir trénu (Under the Tree), for which she received the award of the best actress by Cinema Scandinavia, as well as receiving the Edda (Icelandic movie awards) for the best actress in a starring role.
"We can say with some certainty that no other actress has made Icelanders laugh as often, and as sincerely, as Edda Björgvinsdóttir", part of the official statement read.
