All thirteen members of Iceland’s National Culinary Team have decided to withdraw from the team, mbl.is reports. The mass resignation is intended as a protest against the team management’s decision to sign a contract with Arnarlax, a company that engages in open-net salmon farming.
Team member Garðar Kári Garðarson announced the resignations on his Facebook page. “I am a member of the Icelandic Culinary Team,” read his post, “and we as a team protest management’s decision to sign a contract with a company that produces salmon via open-net fish farming. Such production practices are a threat to wild salmon and trout stocks and have numerous negative environmental impacts on the ecosystem of Iceland. I only use products that are produced in a sustainable way and in harmony with nature and can’t take part in promoting, on behalf of Iceland, products that are produced in this way.”
The post was then undersigned by all of the other members of the team who affirmed their collective intention to resign from the team, including one chef who was abroad at the time of the statement’s release but has since also confirmed his withdrawal.
