Since you don't have a synagogue, why is the “Star of David” on a building in downtown Reykjavík?

Q: Me and my wife spent two and a half weeks in Iceland in July 2007 and had a great time. I just wanted to ask a small question regarding the photo attached. It was taken in Hafnarstraeti or Austurstraeti in downtown Reykjavík. Since you don't have a synagogue in Reykjavík, do you know the story behind the “Star of David” on that building?

A: According to Snorri Freyr Hilmarsson, who is on the board of the House Preservation Society Torfusamtökin, the Star of David is on that building on Austurstraeti 9 (which currently houses the nightclub Rex) because it used to be a store owned by merchant Egill Jacobsen, who came from a Danish-Jewish family.
